Advanced Pencil poppin'

Originally pencil poppers were designed by Stan Gibbs to reach striped bass busting well beyond the reach of other lures.   This trait alone has earned it a permanent slot in many angler’s bags.   They come in many different designs from wood, plastic, floating, sinking--- the options are almost limitless.

Cigar Swimmer

Here on the west coast you would be hard pressed to run into a fellow angler throwing a wooden swimmer.  Most are accustomed to throwing either bucktails or plastic swimmers like the SP Minnow.  The wooden swimmer is more commonly thrown by surf fishing purists.   They know the history of the sport and are familiar with all the different wooden plugs such as pikies, surfsters, lefties and of course the cigar.

Buck-tailing for striper -  Montauk style     by Jay Dawgy

So by no means would I consider myself an expert when fishing a bucktail/ hair raiser, or whatever you want to call it.  Honesty, I wouldn’t call myself an expert on any of the variety of artificial’s I throw.  If you’ve heard the phrase “the art of fishing the bucktail”, I am nowhere close to knowing what that actually is – at least for now.

BIG MOMMA

2009 was one of the best striper seasons that I have ever encountered in California.  It was an el nino year that caused the waters off the coast to be warmer than usual.  This made fish to appear in good numbers as early as April and the surf was teeming with all kinds of bait from anchovies to sardines.  I recall people catching these sardines in such large quantities that they would smoke them and sell them to willing patrons such as myself.   I think in total I caught over 60 fish that season and to date (in 2013) I have yet to accomplish such a feat.  What’s even more amazing though is that my recent trip to Montauk in the Fall of 2012 may have yielded me close to that number just after 1 week of fishing.  In that one week, it’s safe to say that I had at least 50 fish total.  Yes, I am glutton for stripers in the surf.
